Privacy

For each request we store the page requested, the time, your IP address, your browser's user-agent string, the referring page, and your browser's language preference.

Your IP address is also sent to a third-party lookup service (ip-api.com) to obtain an approximate city and country. The result is cached so the same address is not looked up twice.

One cookie is set: vid, a random identifier that lets us recognise repeat visits from the same browser. It is HTTP-only, meaning page scripts cannot read it, and it expires after two years.

If you sign in, a session cookie is set to keep you signed in. If you sign in on a browser that already carried a vid cookie, earlier anonymous visits from that browser become associated with your account.

On first load, the site records characteristics your browser exposes: screen size and colour depth, time zone, platform, touch support, and reported memory and processor count. In combination these can distinguish one visitor from another, and we use them for that purpose.

On pages that require signing in, the site records how you interact with the text: which sections are on screen and for how long, and certain browser actions such as copying text or opening developer tools. Where text is copied, the copied extract is stored.

This exists because the site is shown to a small number of invited people and we want to understand which parts of it land. It is not used to build profiles for advertising, and it is never sold or shared.

If you register with an invitation, we store your email address and a cryptographic hash of your password. We do not store your password itself.

Nobody buys or receives this data. It is processed on our behalf by the services that run the site: Vercel (hosting and aggregate traffic analytics), Neon (database), and ip-api.com (location lookup). Public pages also load Google Analytics, which sets its own cookies and receives your visit data under Google's privacy policy. Google Analytics is not loaded on pages that require signing in.

Records are retained while the site remains in its current invitation-only phase. There is no automated deletion schedule at present.

You can ask what has been recorded about you, ask for it to be corrected, or ask for it to be deleted, and we will act on the request. Depending on where you live you may have a legal right to this; either way, ask and it will be done.
